About Odissi

Odissi is a dance form from the state of Odisha that draws its movement and repertoire from sculpture, painting, literature, theatre and ritual practices. It received the status of a classical dance in India in the mid-twentieth century.

Odissi’s movements blossom from the distinct chowk and tribhanga stances, as well as abhanga and samabhanga. The Odissi repertoire primarily consists of nritta–abstract pieces that are led by rhythm and melody, and nritya–dances based on poetry or other texts.
